English Abstract
Municipal solid waste management is one of the challenges facing Jordan, including landfill leachate.
As this leachate is not treated, the process is limited to collecting it in open ponds in which it is evaporated, and this method is not environmentally acceptable.
Al-Ghabawi landfill is the only sanitary landfill in Jordan and the largest landfill that receives waste from many regions, so it was chosen for this study.
This thesis dealt with conducting coagulation experiments for the leachate of Al-Ghabawi landfill by using alum and Moringa seeds as coagulants.
These experiments were conducted in several stages, the first stage by adding a same amount of alum to find the optimum pH that achieved the best removal of turbidity.
The next stage was by adding different doses of alum was at the optimum pH, then the best dose of alum was determined.
After that the coagulation process was performed by adding different doses of Moringa seeds with the optimum dose of alum at the optimum pH, then the best dose of Moringa seeds was determined.
Finally the experiment was carried out using Moringa seeds alone, as a natural coagulant at optimum pH and determining the best doses of Moringa seeds.
The results showed that the best removal of turbidity was at a pH of 5.5.
The use of Moringa seeds and alum together in the coagulation process showed the best results on the removal of turbidity was 43-75% , removal suspended solids, dissolved solids and electrical conductivity were 33- 41%, 10-17% and 78-79% respectively.
On the other hand the removal of iron, lead, manganese, chromium and cobalt were 89-93%, 38-42%, 73% and 70-76% respectively.
This indicates that the coagulation process was improved by using Moringa oleifera seeds.
It was found that Moringa seeds gave the best removal of the COD and BOD were88-91% and 80-85% respectively.
Where the Moringa oleifera seeds dose alone as a coagulant is a better option than using alum dose to increased the removal efficiency of COD and BOD.
