A stylo-rhetorical analysis of supplication in Islamic and Christian prayers

The study aims at revealing the stylistic and rhetorical features used in Islamic and Christian supplications in the Islamic and Christian prayers.

this research paper concentrates on rhetorical and stylistic analysis of a selected prayer of imam al-Hussein (peace be upon him) and Jesus Christ and tries to answer the questions : what are the rhetorical tools utilized in these texts ? what are the rhetorical functions of such tools utilized in the two texts ? imam al-Hussein (PBUH) and Jesus Christ have a very important and vital position in Islam and Christianity.

rhetoric has strong bonds with religion and society.

Muslim and Christian religious leaders utilized rhetoric as a very effective method in making direct interaction with Allah and people as well.

religious supplication is utilized by religious people to ask Allah for assistance for them and for other people.

the selected prayers were made by Imam al-Hussein (PBUP) entitled ( دعاء بسم الله و بالله و من الله و إلى الله) and the other prayer for Jesus Christ entitled 'prayer of thankfulness'.

these two sampled prayer are used to show imam al-Hussein's and Jesus Christ's language use as a weapon for supplication in order to ask and insists in asking Allah to get what they want.

the methodology of the study is conducted according to the framework of leech and short (2007) which focuses on evaluating and examining language forms and ideas in the language of the two prayers.

the findings clarify that imam al-Hussein and Jesus Christ (PHUT) utilize certain strategies in their language in order to show thankfulness and gratitude for Allah and to gain his support.
