Abstract EN

Through this article, we are trying to clarify the real philosophical basis of the comparative literature in its historical period (French ), and this to remove the ambiguity and confusion which almost accompany speaking about the birth of the comparative literature (the nineteenth century); this confusion is essentially based on relating the appearance of this science to two factors; “Scientism” and “Romanticism” without making distinction between those factors, despite the clear contradiction between them.

This article shows that the comparative literature was based in that era on a pure positivist enlightening philosophy, and it was not based on a Romantic philosophy, despite the role which the Romanticism playing in spreading out the idea of “cosmopolitanism”.
