English Abstract

Introduction: Adolescence is the phase of the shift from childhood to adulthood, and any deficiencies in this phase will lead to many disorders and complications.

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an educational nutritional intervention program (ENIP) among adolescent school girls in Alkarak Governorate.

Design: Pretest-Posttest intervention was utilized as a study design.

Methods: The study was conducted during the period from 9th Feb to March 13, 2020 in AlKarak governorate schools, south Jordan, using a reliable and valid structured-interview questionnaire.

A multistage sampling method used to collect 100 adolescent school girls.

Data analysis was conducted using SPSS-19.

The descriptive analysis, Paired test analysis, Independent sample t-test, correlation, ANOVA, and multiple linear regressions were used.

Results: The mean age for all adolescent school girls (N = 100) was 15.21±0.69 years.

The dietary behavior after the ENIP significantly improved (3.79±0.629).

The knowledge scores of nutritional health significantly better following ENIP (0.755±0.153).

Also nutritional attitude had a noticeable improvement after intervention (4.18±0.34).

The correlation coefficients between dietary behavior, nutritional knowledge, and nutritional attitude before and after ENIP were positive and statistically significant (r = 0.771, 0.423, and 0.666, respectively).

Multiple linear regressions revealed that about 40% of the variation in the dietary behavior was attributed to the nutritional attitude, (R2 = 0.402, p < 0.001).

Conclusion: The educational nutritional intervention program among adolescent school girls in the AlKarak governorate was effective.

Recommendations: The study recommends that while smaller-scale interventions in schools are effective in improving nutritional behavior, nutritional knowledge, and nutritional attitude of students; the Ministry of Health, Ministry of education, and public health sectors should collaborate to bring more comprehensive, bigger-scale interventions in schools for maximum benefit.
