The growing population of the world and their over-exploitation of natural resources over thousands of years have led to a clear degradation of the environment; the decline in biodiversity at global, regional and national levels is likely to threaten human survival and sustainable development.

International institutions have contributed to the implementation of the requirements of international conventions on the need to protect international biodiversity by setting out guidelines for an international biodiversity strategy; these include the combination of conserving diversity, managing biological resources and using modern technologies rationally to achieve sustainable development.

The emergence of modern biotechnology technologies has affected health and the environment.
