The story was never isolated from its surroundings, be it social, political or economic, because it represents the reality of life, and talking about the story means talking about the reality of people’s life.

Since the realist doctrine reflects reality in a literary way and is concerned with all literature and art that takes care of the lived reality, we try to apply this theory to one of the short stories of Bahaa Taher, one of the most famous pioneers of short stories in the modern Arab world, whose novels take a realistic approach that is concerned with drawing the Arab social reality and analyzing its causes and motives.

This article aims, through the descriptive-analytical approach, to clarify the most prominent manifestations of social realism and to show the writer's position on the lived reality with all the social issues and problems he faces in his story collection “I did not know that peacocks fly”.

Among the most important findings of the article is that the factual foundations have leaked into this short story collection and that this group denotes the deteriorating conditions and the most prominent manifestations of realism in it: characterization, interest in the vernacular language, expression of political and social opinions, reference to aspects of modernity and their correspondence with heritage.
