Clinical presentation of juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma in Sudanese patients

Objective : To study the clinical presentations of Juvenile Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma (JNA) in Sudanese patients in comparison to other similar international series.

Methods : This is a retrospective study conducted in Al-Khartoum ENT Teaching Hospital and Ibn-Sina Specialized Hospital covering a period of ten years (1995 till 2005).

Results : A total number of 13 patient’s records were reviewed.

The disease was found exclusively in adolescent males with maximum incidence at 21-25 years of age (46.1 %).

The most common presenting symptoms were nasal obstruction and epistaxis seen in all patients (100 %), rhinolalia clausa in 7 patients (53.8 %), headache in 4 patients (30.7 %), earache and conductive hearing loss in 4 patients (30.7 %), visual disturbances in 1 patient (7.6 %).

The duration of symptoms at presentation was 6-11 months in 7 patients (53.8 %), 12-17 months in 4 patients (30.7 %) and 18-23 months in 2 patients (15.3 %).

The most common clinical signs were nasopharyngeal mass seen in all patients (100 %), nasopharyngeal mass with nasal extension in 10 patients (76.7 %), proptosis in 4 patients (23 %) and cheek swelling in 4 patients (23 %).

Conclusions : JNA is a rare head and neck neoplasm in sudanese patients.

The disease was found exclusively in males in the second and third decades of life.

The most common presenting symptoms were nasal obstruction and intermittent epistaxis.

The most common presenting sign was a nasopharyngeal mass.
