Abstract EN
Ever since its inception, film has had an influence on the literary sphere; however, prior to the conscious attempt on behalf of literary writers to incorporate film form in narrative discourse, the new medium had already begun to influence the philosophical debates of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Technological innovations enabled thinkers to reconsider historical theories of causality, sensory experience, and the relationship between subject and object.
The 20th century, therefore, witnessed modernist writers placing the sensual and visual in service of examining epistemology and the nature of subject-object relations.
This article seeks to trace narrative instances that reveal the complex interconnection between the new media and literary expression.
It examines the effects of changing media and technological progress on human perception through providing a close reading of James Joyce’s stories, ‘A Little Cloud’ and ‘A Painful Case’.
The aim is to elucidate how early writings by Joyce reveal a complex interconnection between technological advances and the literary imagination
