Interest has grown in the phenomenon of multilingualism, research on multilingualism and multilingual education over the last years.

Some developments in research on second language acquisition and bilingualism have begun to exert an impact on second language teaching and bi‐ and multilingual education.

It concerns the introduction of the concept of multicompetence, reflecting a bilingual view of bilingualism.

This article will be described these new developments in more detail, and the development of multiple competency approaches to language proficiency is discussed.

The main theme of the article is that multilingual education can only be successful if the cognitive competencies of multilingualism are explicitly recognized at the societal level.
