Abstract EN

This study sheds light on the video conferencing technology as a means to simplify the litigation procedures, due to its advantages that allow time and effort reduction.

Increasingly, many countries are using this technique to hold proceedings in criminal cases, when required, including first appearance and trial.

Some experiences have proven the effectiveness of remote trial in improving the performance of the justice system and simplifying litigation procedures through the various stages of the criminal case.

However, the use of teleconference as a substitute for the defendant's personal appearance raises concerns on several levels that may affect the quality of justice.

The Algerian legislator has adopted the approach of contemporary penal systems in using the videoconferencing technique by providing for it in Law No.

03-15 of February 01, 2015, related to the modernization of justice.

Presently, its use in criminal procedures is stipulated by virtue of Ordinance No.

04-20 dated August 30, 2020, supplementing the Code of Criminal Procedure.

Accordingly, this research paper attempts to assess the impact of this practice that may prejudice some of the traditional procedural principles.
