Abstract EN

In this paper, there is a correction of the concept of (Tawqeef) in Ibn Faris's work.

It discusses the ambiguity of the term (Tawqeef) and introduces an explanation to a broad concept that modern researchers have questioned about Ibn Faris in a way that does not correlate with his statues in the field, his stances, and his writings.

This will be done by following the relations between Ibn Faris's different stances and writings, and connecting them to each other.

This research concludes that (Tawqeef) originated from Islamic Jurisprudence and its Principles, and gone through an important historical development during the mixing of various Arabic and Islamic sciences when Ibn Faris used it in language sciences, which determines that what he meant by it is relevant to how it had been used in Islamic and Arabic sciences.

This also suggests that there is some overlapping that was happening, which needs to be analysed.

And by analysing it, Ibn Faris's interpretation of (Tawqeef) in linguistics becomes more apparent and precise.

Furthermore, it highlights the consistency of his opinions, and how they support each other.

That is why this research includes providing evidence concerning the origin of the term, its development, and Ibn Faris's definition of it, as well as showing that other Arabic language scientists used the same term referring to the same concept.

The research also states the value of the term and its methodological implications studying Arabic language in providing evidence and inferring, as well as linguistic development and modernisation, by clarifying what scientific and methodological implications that build on it, in order to establish a solid foundation in the methodology of studying Arabic language.
