This article searches for predictors of outcome of lithium use.

Different studies pointed out the clinical, biological and psychological factors that can predict the response, in bipolar and non bipolar affective disorders.

The search for predictors of outcome has not been particularly rewarding, and the use of lithium remains empirical.

A trial of lithium is the most powerful predictor of outcome
