Citizenship enables the individual to benefit from the state protection in the context of international dispute, thus, the nationality criterion in the private international law is the factor which determines the international jurisdiction with distinction, yet there are some complications while its application; what makes it a very complicated and not always consonant with reality.

the assessment of nationality criterion as a factor of international jurisdiction shows that although its complications and criticisms against it, it still be a reliable factor especially to link between personal status matters.

one of the things that help to overcome such complications is to support the nationality factor by other factors like domicile factor.
