In her novel Mercy (2008), the American nobel laureate Toni Morrison (1931-2019) revisits the beginnings of American society ; a society shaped by violence and its daily ramifications, and backed up and legitimized as it were by religion.

in the novel, Morrison oscillates between two worlds ; one which is dominated by a racial supremacy and slavery discourse and the other which is pulled into submission and acceptance of this domination.

breaking through this 'slave narrative' is seen by Morrison as an essential step towards reclaiming human dignity, and a mechanism to dismantle the dependency rhetoric from within.
