In all areas of research and education, there are certain shortcomings, which persistently resist our efforts to fill them out.

In translation studies, one of these shortcomings indicated by the absence of suitable texts for teaching the theory of the translation.

Regarding the history of translation, the collection of Paul Horguelin (Anthology of the way to translate) still plays a useful role for the French domain, in terms of methodology.

The classic (but very old) text of Vinay and Darbelnet is still working and Jean Delisle recent contributions (Discourse Analysis as a Translation Method) and by Peter Newmark (A Textbook of Translation), offer the teacher a choice of educational instruments.

Although there are others texts where various theoretical dimensions of translation are analysed, we have long awaited a book whose aim is to synthesize the most important models in translation theory for educational purposes.
