Arab mysticism, Sufism, has been one of the major concerns for western studies and German orientalism in particular.

as a matter of fact, a large number of ancient German orientalists have been interested in studying Sufism.

Friedrich Rückert attempted to examine Islamic and Arabic mysticism from a unique perspective, unlike Annemarie Schimmel, one of his prominent students.

both of them were greatly influenced and fascinated by the Sufi poetry as well as the Arab Sufi poets.

despite their mutual interest, they had divergent viewpoints such as the examination, research, translation, and the methods used.

drawing an analogy between the two orientalists, we note that in spite of sharing some common points, they differ in tackling other topics.

this begs the following fundamental question: “being influenced by the Arabic Sufi poetry, what are the similarities and the differences between the German orientalists?”.
