English Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of counseling program in developing coping skills and reducing communication apprehension among mothers of children with multiple disabilities in Amman, to achieve this goal a semi- experimental approach was used, the study sample consisted of (30) mothers of children with multiple disabilities.

The sample was divided into two experimental and control groups (15) in each group.

Two measures were used: the coping skills scale and the communication apprehension scale, after verifying their validity and reliability.

A counseling program was built based on the cognitive behavioral theory and consisted of (14) counseling sessions; it was applied to members of the experimental group.

After statistically processing the data, the results of the study revealed a low level in the overall degree of coping skills scale and the sub-dimensions (social support, negative evaluation, paraphrasing, family preparation and acceptance of assistance), and a moderate level for the fifth dimension (spiritual support).

The study revealed that there is a high level in the overall score of the communication apprehension scale and the subdimension (public speaking, and meetings), while the other dimensions of the measure (group discussion, and interpersonal conversations) came at a moderate level.

The results also indicated that there were statistically significant differences at the level of significance (α=0.05) on the telemetry between the two groups in the total dimensional score, and the dimensions of both scales, the differences were in favor of the experimental group, depending on the indicative program variable .

It also indicated that there were no statistically significant differences at the significance level (α=0.05) between the telemetric and tracer measurements of the experimental group, Depending on the indicative program variable, the overall score and sub-dimensions of both measures.

Finally, the study recommended conducting more studies targeting the study sample (mothers of children with multiple disabilities) and providing counseling programs for re-adaptation, and strengthen the behavior and skills of coping and coexistence.
