English Abstract
Advanced methodologies in gamma-ray spectroscopy allow for excellent background suppression and increased efficiency using composite Clover detectors with combinations of active shields.
The active shield consists of multiple scintillators carefully oriented around the Ge crystals, and consist of BGO, CsI and Plastic scintillators.
The events from such combination, registered in list mode and analyzed offline, facilitate significant improvements in the sensitivity for detecting gamma emissions.
The study will thus characterize the energy and time properties of the active shield signals, which will allow for the optimization of the setup in its different modes of operation.
The geometry of the final setup will be optimized for Clover-BGO coincidences or anti-coincidences, depending on the details of the particular application.
Further background reduction can be accomplished using the Plastic scintillator signals.
Severe problems linked to close geometry detection are foreseen to be solved using the granularity of the system, supported by extensive Monte Carlo simulations.
After conducting thorough research, the methodology is foreseen to be adapted and applied in different nuclear, security, environmental, food and water-related safety applications, among others, which standard gamma-ray spectrometry cannot efficiently and properly serve.
This wide spectrum of applications is of vital national importance, and can benefit from advanced gamma detection systems with highly improved signal-to-background ratios, associated with event selection techniques.
