Abstract EN

This research aims at identifying the stages and characteristics of urbanization in Algeria and the problems facing Algerian cities.

After presenting the various scientific materials available on the subject using descriptive and historical methods, the study concluded that the Algerian city had experienced a variety of urban life throughout its long history, from the Roman conquest to the French colonization.

All these political configurations in their different cultures, civilizations and objectives have left a clear mark on Algeria's architectural heritage.

However, urban life in its complex form emerged further after independence, with successive waves of rural migration to cities in search of work increasing in the early years of independence, security in the last decade of the last century, and the privileges provided by urban life at the beginning of this century.

All these factors have made the process of urbanization in Algeria merely quantitative, resulting in a number of material, legislative, social and economic problems that have become a source of inconvenience and fear within the city rather than stability and a sense of reassurance.
