Abstract EN

This study aims at highlighting the Maghreb countries banking sectors competition (Algeria-Tunisia-Morocco) as well as the prospects for their advancement in light of the COVID-19 pandemic repercussions.

this is achieved through the study, analysis and comparison of their competition indicators.

in addition, the study tracks the most important measures taken by these sectors as well as the ways and prospects for advancing their monetary and banking work in light of the pandemic repercussions.

in order to achieve the study objective, the descriptive, analytical, and comparative approaches were used.

the study concluded that the competition indicators of the Maghreb countries banking sectors vary from one country to another because they are affected by the economic conditions of each country.

the Algerian banking sector is found to be at the top of the competitive scene, followed by the Moroccan sector.

however, the Tunisian sector ranked the last.

the study has concluded that although the monetary and financial conditions of these countries, like the rest of the world, were affected by the corona virus pandemic, the policy of their banking sectors under the guidance of their central banks played a major role in mitigating the repercussions of the pandemic.

this was through adopting many monetary expansionist measures and policies which boosted investor confidence levels as well as supported local liquidity conditions and providing the necessary credit to alleviate the economic slack witnessed in those markets.

the study recommends the necessity of mobilizing banking supervisors for the tools they have in their set of rules in order to respond to natural disasters, operational risk events and bouts of banking pressure.

this is through the use of the protective margins and enhancing disclosure and transparency methods as well as cross-border communication and coordination.
