Islam legislated jihad in order to spread the doctrine of monotheism and make it the simple belief on the face of the earth.

The jihad was not for the purpose of extending Islamic influence and authority out of hatred or belittling the lives of others, but rather in order to remove injustice, persecution and servitude to other than God Almighty.

Those who refused to submit to the doctrine of monotheism, and as for the other people of the Book, the orders were that they showed hostility to Islam, they would fight and if they showed peace, they would accept their religion in exchange for the tribute if they were living under the authority of the Islamic state.
