Abstract EN

The current research focused on the study of modeling the spatio-temporal change of the administrative borders and the population of the governorates of Erbil and Nineveh for the period 1921 to 2019 and the study will be limited to taking three years, namely 1921, 1959, 2019, and then addressing the emergence of the administrative borders of Iraq in general and the two governorates in particular, and addressing the factors that affect the borders in general.

The study area was represented by the Iraqi governorates (Erbil, Nineveh), which are selected models from Iraq, and the reason for choosing them was that the two governorates challenge each other and there have been significant changes in the administrative borders.

As for the temporal boundaries of the study, they were determined between 1921 to 2019, as it is the period in which basic maps of the region are available first, and it is one of the most periods that witnessed a change in administrative borders secondly.

The study concluded that Iraq in general and the governorates concerned with the study in particular have witnessed a great development within the borders of its internal governorates, and this is the result of the increase and growth of its population.

Then I set out to create an atlas to change the borders of the Iraqi provinces as an essential step on which the subsequent studies depend, and to benefit from them in the historical studies on which historical geography focuses.

Modern technologies with information systems and remote sensing data are one of the most successful ways in building models that simulate the change of the borders of the Iraqi provinces because they reflect the spatial and temporal change.
