English Abstract
This research aims to study the large-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), which National Electric Power Company is planning to install in Jordan National Grid (NG), from Supply Chain Management and Inventory control theory perspective, in order to evaluate the financial feasibility of such energy storages by considering it as inventory, where the electrical energy (Meg-Watt-Hour) is the good being stored.
Reflecting the Battery Energy Storage Systems technical specifications into Inventory theory terms was the first step to put these storage systems within the supply chain framework.
The next step was to analyses the supplies and loads of these Batteries.
The Wind energy was selected as the supply for the batteries due to its variability and intermittency, where network operator (NEPCO) needs to reduce its effect on the network stability.
The PV was ignored as an energy supply to feed the storage system since it is being generated during the day time with almost predictable behavior, which can be easily consumed by the National Grid.
The Wind Energy supply profiles were analysed and fitted with Weibull density functions on hourly base.
Based on that an Excel program was designed to simulate the daily operation of the Battery Energy Storage, i.e., charging and discharging, and calculating the amount of energy purchased and sold through these units and hence the net energy and profits were estimated.
The results have shown that installing the BESS near the big customers (selling price 0.237JOD/KWH) with energy capacity of four times of the power capacity (30MW/120MWH) would make the solution more feasible and decrease the period to return the initial investment to around 8 years comparing with 16 years as in the case of energy capacity is two times of the power capacity (30MW/60MWH), i.e., 52% reduction.
Also the study has presented some recommendations concerning the Battery sizing and costing.
