Ellipsis of subject and predicate in English and Arabic : a contrastive study

Abstract EN

This study deals with ellipsis of subject and predicate in English and Arabic.

It sheds light on the cases in which the subject or the predicate is obligatorily or optionally ellipted in both languages.

A theoretical comparison has been made between the two languages concerning subject and predicate ellipsis as a linguistic phenomenon, dealing with all its types and functions in both languages.

The comparison has been constantly supported by discussions and many examples.

Finally, the study has reached out that there are some similarities and differences between English and Arabic as far as ellipsis of subject and predicate is concerned.
