Abstract EN

The study aimed to assess the environmental impact of al-Akaider dump of waste disposal on the population and the land.

the EIA methodology includes collecting information about waste disposal, then doing an environmental impact analysis using the swat model, in addition to making a classification to know the land use in the waste disposal by using aerial photo via google earth after correcting it, and making maps via geographic information system (gis) , and analyzing them by using digital elevation model (DEM).

' Leopold matrix' was also used to analyze the environmental impact of the waste disposal, as well as the “check list” was conducted to check the effects on all of the elements of environment.

the type of use in al-Akaider dump was classified, where it was found that the solid waste covered the largest area of the waste disposal area, followed by the Zebar basins (liquid wastes of olive press) that are dumped into open pools.

then, come the green areas.

it was also found that gases emission rates are heading to the southwestern direction, which affects the residential areas and the population as explained through digital elevation model (DEM).

the Leopold matrix and the lists method showed that the activities of the waste disposal negatively affected the water by about (-4) degrees, and the air by about (-19) degrees, which affected the quality of the air surrounding the dump and its vicinity, in addition to the smells that may cause respiratory and organic diseases for residents of localities near the dumpsite.

plant systems were also affected by (-6) degree, especially agricultural crops, which would be contaminated with the chemical elements of the residues that were dumped into the waste disposal.

the existence of some social risks to the population was also found to be negative, by about (- 4) degrees.
