Arabic Abstract

تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى البحث في استخدام أفعال الكلام والوظائف اللغوية التي تظهر في المحادثات في كتب اللغة الإنجليزية للصف العاشر في فلسطين.

وتهدف أيضا إلى معرفة مدى فعالية أفعال الكلام ووظائف اللغة من ناحية تداولية.

ومن اجل تحقيق اهداف الدراسة استخدم الباحث تصنيف أفعال الكلام ل "سيول" (۱۹۷۹) وتصنيف وظائف اللغة ل "فان أيك وترم" (۱۹۹۰).

تعد هذه الدراسة دراسة نوعية بشكل أساسي لأنها تعتمد على تحليل المحتوى تعد دراسة كمية بشكل جزئي لأنها تعتمد على الارقام والتكرارات بعد التحليل أظهرت الدراسة ان الكتب لا تشمل على أفعال الكلام "الإعلانات" وان أفعال الكلام الأكثر تكرارا هي "الممثلات" ثم يليها الموجهات" و"الشعيرات" و "الملزمات" على التوالي وان الكتب لا تشمل على بعض الأفعال الوظيفية المهمة مثل "التحدي" و " القسم".

وتكشف النتائج أيضا أن الكتب تشمل وظائف اللغة الرئيسية، لكنها لا تشمل جميع التصنيفات الفرعية لوظائف اللغة، مثل "جذب الانتباه" و"التلخيص".

وإن وظائف اللغة الأكثر شيوعا هي "نقل المعلومات والسعي إليها، ثم يليها "التعبير عن المواقف واكتشافها" و"إنجاز الأمور (الإقناع)" و"هيكلة الخطاب" و"إصلاح التواصل" و"التفاعل الاجتماعي" على التوالي وتظهر الدراسة أيضا ان هذه الكتب ليست فعالة تداوليا وذلك لعدة أسباب التباين في توزيع أفعال الكلام ووظائف اللغة في الكتب وقلة تناسق السباق وقلة التعليمات وعدم وجود بعض الأفعال الوظيفية والتصنيفات الفرعية لوظائف اللغة المهمة والتركيز على الكفاءة اللغوية أكثر من الكفاءة التداولية.

ويعرض الباحث بعض التوصيات للمعلمين ومصممي المنهاج وصانعي القرار.

التوصية الأكثر أهمية هي العمل على تطوير الكفاءة التداولية لدى الطلاب من خلال التركيز على إتقانهم لأفعال الكلام ووظائف اللغة المختلفة من أجل التواصل بشكل فعال ومناسب في سياقات اجتماعية وثقافية مختلفة .

English Abstract

This study aims at investigating the use of speech acts and language functions presented in the conversations and dialogues of the English for Palestine tenth grade’s textbooks.

It also aims to find out the degree to which the speech acts and language functions are pragmatically effective.

To achieve the objectives of the study, the researcher analyzed the textbooks according to the taxonomy of Searle (1979) of speech acts and the taxonomy of Van Ek and Trim (1990) of language functions.

The study is mainly qualitative because it is a content analysis and it is partly quantitative because it depends on the frequencies and percentages of the data analyzed.

After analyzing the collected data, the findings of the study show that the most frequent speech acts types are assertives, directives, expressives and commissives respectively.

However, the textbooks do not include the speech act of declaratives.

The study also shows that the textbooks lack some important illocutionary acts, like challenging and swearing.

The results also reveal that the textbooks include the main language functions, but they do not involve all language functions subcategories, like attracting attention and summarising.

The most frequent language functions are imparting and seeking factual information, expressing and finding out attitudes, getting things done (suasion), structuring discourse, communication repair and socializing respectively.

The results demonstrate that these textbooks do not seem pragmatically effective because of several reasons: inequality in the distribution of speech acts and language functions in the textbooks, lack of context, lack of instructions, lack of some important illocutionary acts and language functions subcategories, and there is more focus on linguistic competence than pragmatic competence.

The researcher offers recommendations to teachers, curriculum designers and decision makers.

The most important recommendation is to work on developing students' pragmatic competence by focusing on their mastery of various speech acts and language functions so as to communicate actively and aptly in different social and cultural contexts.
