Wasted or dissipated energy is one of the biggest problems that different fields seeking to eliminate and work on the optimal exploitation for the available energy.
The provision of safe and comfortable conditions for people inside buildings is a primary goal of the architectural design process, which can be achieved by good climatic design for buildings.
Although most architects are aware of the importance of the climatic aspects in building design, that reflected various academic studies, most of the designed buildings in Libya are not based on climatic analysis, as well as the required conditions are missed or ignored.
In this research, the EnergyPlus simulation program was used, to calculate the energy consumption in the Engineering building located in the Libyan Centre for Solar Energy Research and Studies (CSERS), as well as the thermal loads resulting from the components in the building; such as electrical equipment, lighting, occupied working hours and the building structural components.
Results showed that the largest consumption of energy is the air-conditioning, with a total consumption of 1,775 kW.h, which is mainly in the months of June, July and August, then the indoor lighting, with a total consumption of 1,611 kW.h distributed almost equally around the year months.
Water heating system comes in the third highest consumption in the building, with a total of 1,569 kW.h, followed by electrical equipment with a total of 895.7 kW.h, while the lowest energy consumption is the heating with a total of 396 kW.h in the months of December, January and February.
