English Abstract

Background The main focus of the study is to explore Jordanian pharmacists' perception of their role in community pharmacies and how they describe their professional role in community pharmacies.

This includes knowing and studying the perceived strengths and weaknesses of community pharmacists, their practices towards patients, and their awareness of the importance of their role, especially concerning dispensing pharmaceutical products.

Additionally, this study explores community pharmacists' perceptions regarding communication with patients and other health care providers.

Finally, this study identifies the barriers that prevent community pharmacists from carrying out their duty and suggests solutions to mitigate these barriers by providing recommendations to the health administration authorities.

Methodology This study was based on a cross-sectional survey that collected data from a sample of community pharmacists in twelve governorates in Jordan.

Data collection lasted for four months (from September to December 2020).

Descriptive data analysis was used to calculate the mean, standard deviation, percentile ratios, in addition to the minimum and maximum values.

The Chi-square test was used to determine any significant difference between the participants' responses.

Results The study sample consisted of a total of 1029 community pharmacists (546 males and 483 females), of which the majority (60.8%) were from Amman Governorate.

The majority of the participating community pharmacists reported having Bachelor’s graduates and having graduated from Jordanian universities.

The most frequently reported age category for participants was 31-40 years.

Overall, 84% of the participants reported better interaction with physicians than with other healthcare providers.

Additionally, the majority of participants (85%) reported having interacted with physicians to inquire about switching a prescribed medicine to another product suggested by the participating pharmacist.

Conclusions Participating pharmacists’ perception of their role and attitudes in the community pharmacy setting was positive, evidenced by high agreement on many items related to pharmacists’ roles and attitudes.

However, only 43% of pharmacists reported doing little or no follow-up on patients’ medical conditions and were satisfied with serving them only while in the pharmacy.

A quarter of the participants (25%) reported not providing awareness programs for patients, except when prompted by patients.

Finally, 43% of the participants reported not creating an individual care plan for their patients, while 44% of them reported not implementing a plan if it exists.

Yet, the participants expressed that the barriers facing them are only a few.
