English Abstract

This study aimed to reveal the relationship between social support and both the emotional intelligence and independence of the Palestinian prisoners’ wives.

The study sample consisted of (74) prisoners’ wives in the governorates of Gaza.

The researcher used the scale of social support and independence that she prepared, and she also adopted Maha Gibran’s (2015) emotional intelligence scale, and statistically processed data using averages, percentages, correlation coefficients, and differences tests.

The study reached the following results: It was found that the levels of social support, emotional intelligence, and independence are all high among prisoners' wives, and they came with a relative weight in the following order (74.80%), (77.20%), (80.80%).

The study showed a direct correlation between social support and both emotional intelligence and independence among the prisoners’ wives.

The study also showed the presence of a direct correlation between independence and emotional intelligence among the prisoners' wives, and that there are differences in the level of social support due to the age variable in favour of the wives who are between 20-30 years old, and to the housing variable in favour of the wives who live in housing they owned.

The study revealed that there are no differences in the level of social support due to the following variables (duration of the husband’s prison sentence, number of children, work, and educational level), and in the level of independence attributed to the following variables (age, housing, number of children, work, educational level).

As for the variable of independence only, the study showed that there are significant differences attributable to the variable of the husband’s prison sentence in favour of those whose sentence duration is 10 years or more, while there are no differences in the level of emotional intelligence due to the following variables (the husband’s prison sentence, age, housing, number of children, work, and educational level).

The study recommends the need to work to enhance social support in its various dimensions, because of the effects it has on the lives of the prisoners’ wives, and the need to work to enhance the emotional intelligence of prisoners’ wives through holding meetings, workshops and training by the relevant authorities, especially by the Ministry of Prisoners.

The study recommends the necessity of working to promote independence among the prisoners’ wives, for it helps them to have confidence in themselves in managing their lives.
