The aim of this research is to investigate the cognitive load in mathematics among a sample of middle school students.

to achieve the objectives of the study, the descriptive approach was used.

and a three-dimensional cognitive load scale was applied to the study sample (221 students).

results showed a high level on the cognitive load and its dimensions among the sample members, except for the germane cognitive load whose level was moderate, as well as statistically significant differences in the mean scores of the sample members in the cognitive load and its dimensions due to the gender in favour of males the study also found statistically significant differences in the average scores sample between the repeaters and successful in mathematics in the cognitive load and its dimensions in favour of the repeaters.
