Abstract EN

This study aims to explain the understanding of the concept of washback and its main principles from English and Arabic researchers’ perspectives through comparing the English and Arabic studies in this area.

the researcher found that the concept of washback is misunderstood by many Arab researchers, as the meaning of washback was mistranslated, and researchers looked at its meaning as a term rather than a concept.

consequently, its applications took a different direction.

Arab researchers applied the concept on any classroom exam in Arabic studies instead of applying it on standardized exams only, as done in English studies.

the researcher concludes that the concept of washback needs to be understood as a concept instead of a term and can be translated to Arabic as the washback of standardized exams to avoid any misunderstanding of this concept.
