Abstract EN

The present study investigated the relationship between second language reading anxiety (FLRA) and reading comprehension in Arabic as a second language.

a total of 119 male and female learners of Arabic from three proficiency levels (beginner, intermediate, and advanced) participated in the study.

two scales were used to collect the data: the foreign language reading anxiety scale (FLRAS) and the reading comprehension test.

the results revealed that the students experienced a moderate level of language reading anxiety.

they also showed statistically significant gender-related differences in language reading anxiety and statistically significant differences in language reading comprehension due to the level of anxiety.

furthermore, a significant negative correlation was found between language reading anxiety and reading comprehension, which was attributed to a number of anxiety sources falling under two factors : unfamiliar writing systems and unfamiliar cultural materials.
