Economic sanctions have been used since time immemorial as a weapon of pressure for direct military intervention in the internal affairs of states, it has been, and remains, an effective means of confronting states, that have always sought to violate customary principles of international humanitarian law.

economic sanctions were legalized and incorporated into the charter of the united nations; however the major powers have always sought to impose their hegemony on the world, by establishing and implementing economic sanctions, unilaterally in the interest of their own interests, without further harm resulting.
