Abstract EN

Classical Arab Scholars are prescriptivists in their orientation who rely heavily analogical inference.

Yet, at the same time, they stand long with listing and paying efforts to finding descriptive interpretations for “markedness” it relation to “Unmarkedness”.

Standard rules, unmarked” grammatical rules, for classical Arabic Grammarian are strictly prescriptive, but not olute, in the sense that a more or less grammatized structure become unmarked due to frequency of use or mutual consensus.

The marked exceptions were no longer deformation of the standard but peripheral to the core and supplements it.

Researchers have kept offering justifications attached to usage-based frequency to Marked Exceptions of the standards, not only in Grammar and Linguistics but also in Arabic Rhetoric or Eloquence (“bayan”, as the Arab used to call it).

However, markedness in rhetorical phenomena remains not fully attended by researchers.

Partial references were made here or there like Ibn Jini (395 H), a well-known scholar and grammarian who addressed one case of rhetorical markedness that can be further extended for linguistic research to other rhetorical markedness.

In this research, review will be dedicated to all scientific efforts on markedness as a rhetorical phenomenon via revisiting the position of by Abdul Qahir Al-Jurjani (471H-? ? ), a well-known grammarian and rhetorician in the field, on the case in question.
