شهدت بريطانيا العظمى في القرن الثامن عشر العديد من الاحداث المهمة والتي مكنتها من الهيمنة على مساحات شاسعة من العالم وإنشاء مستعمرات وشبكات تجارية، أدى استقلال مستعمراتها في أمريكا الشمالية بعد حرب الاستقلال الامريكية، وهزيمة فرنسا في الحروب النابليونية(1792-1815) ،والمكانه التي أكتسبتها البحرية البريطانية تحول الاهتمام البريطاني نحو جزيرة نيوزيلندا، لاسيما وان الملاح الانكليزي جيمس، رسم خرائط مفصلة عن نيوزيلندا، وكتب عن وحشية الشعب الماوري، وفي اعقاب ثلاثينيات القرن التاسع عشر قررت الحكومة البريطانية فرض الحماية وكبح الفوضى في نيوزيلندا وجعلها مستعمرة بريطانية إثر عقد معاهدة ويتانكي عام (1840)، والتي بموجبها تم فرض السيادة البريطانية على الجزيرة الشمالية، وعلى الجزيرة الجنوبية وفق (حق الاكتشاف)،وقد أسهمت العديد من الاسباب في حدوث الحروب البريطانية-الماورية للمدة ما بين (1845-1872)، لاسيما وانها كانت حروباً منفصلة؛ عرفت الاولى بـ حرب تاراناكي الاولى (1860-1861)، وحرب تاراناكي الثانية (1863-1866) ،فضلا عن حروب اًخرى، انتهت بالانتصار البريطاني

Great Britain in the eighteenth century witnessed many important events that enabled it to dominate vast areas of the world and establish colonies and trade networks, the independence of its colonies in North America after the American War of Independence, the defeat of France in the Napoleonic Wars ( - ), and the place it gained The British Navy shifted the British interest towards the island of New Zealand, especially since the English navigator James, drew detailed maps of New Zealand, and wrote about the brutality of the Maori people, and in the wake of the s the British government decided to impose protection and curb chaos in New Zealand and make it a British colony following the Treaty of Waitanki in ( ), according to which British sovereignty was imposed on the North Island, and on the South Island according to the (right of discovery), and many reasons contributed to the occurrence of the British-Maori wars for the period between ( - ), especially since they were separate wars; The first was known as the First Taranaki War ( - ), and the Second Taranaki War ( - ), as well as other wars, which ended with British victory.
