Abstract EN

Universities in the United Kingdom have witnessed a huge debate and development about Research and Supervision which involves tackling challenges and enriching the existing practice.

This has become more obvious after the (UK)’s universities have more students from overseas and local who are willing to complete their research studies.

The need to understand the challenges that may influence the excellence of the supervision and research practices is highlighted (Cree, 2012; Lahenius and Heini, 2012).

Accordingly, for students who attend university for research, the aim generally is not only completing the degree, but also increasing the individual’s opportunities to develop their skills and competencies to fulfil their professional career.

This paper focuses on some the issues and debates on the concept of supervision within the academic context that refers to the institutional practice an academic – from the same institution – performs upon the code of practice produced by the university.

A descriptive methodology was adopted to critically analyze some of the literature on the subject to bring the attention of those who in charge of the UK Council for Graduate Education (UKCGE) to take further steps and work in a harmony with Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAAHE) in enhancing UK supervisory and research practices.

In addition, providing learning and professional development events, conducting research, sharing best-practice developments, and by accumulating data and evidence to support strategies which promote a robust and sustainable postgraduate sector.
