Political representation of the revenge of nature in john Christopher’s : the death of grass

This article examines the revenge of nature in modern fiction because of its human abuse.

The article investigates the abuse and despoliation of nature and its revenge on the government in John Christopher’s The Death of Grass (1956).

This novel will be analyzed through the lens of the ecocritical theory.

This article scrutinizes Christopher’s representation of the Custances’ domination and exploitation of land with the help of the British government because they consider it a passive entity.

It also reveals nature as an agent that can act.

Nature is, consequently, active as long as it has an intention, which manifests in taking revenge on the political system.

This article puts emphasis on the revenge of nature through a pandemic that spreads in the natural world through causing the collapse of the governments all over the world notably the British.

The government is unable to provide national security, this inability leads to the rise of poverty, scarcity of food, riots and barbarism.

This article also attempts to unveil Christopher’s aim in raising the reader’s consciousness about the abuse of nature.
