Abstract EN

With the diversity of the means used to prevent clotting during hemodialysis and the reliance in our country centers only on unfractionated heparin UFH and low molecular weight heparin LMWH, our study aimed to compare the clinical anticoagulant efficacy, safety (especially bleeding), and cost effectiveness of LMWH with UFH.

Clinical clotting was evaluated by visual inspection of the dialyzer and the extracorporeal blood lines after the end of each session, while the bleeding was evaluated by determine the time required to stop bleeding from puncture site.

the results of comparing 845 HD sessions on UH with 851 HD sessions on LMWH during six months showed no significant difference in clotting rate incidence or frequency, while LMWH use was accompanied by minor tendency of bleeding from needle site only at the beginning which was managed by dose adjustment.

there was no difference in platelet count between the two studied groups.

In conclusion, LMWH was as safe as effective in comparison with UFH during our short term study, however the total cost of LMWH was significantly higher than UFH.
