Abstract EN

Introduction : more than 80% of hospitaled patients receive intravenous therapy, this therapy or errors during its application could cause electrolytes serum concentrations disturbances that may affect patient's health .

aim : evaluation of the safety of treatment with hypotonic and isotonic intravenous solutions, and detecting for the errors made during it ,and its effects on patient sodium and potassium serum concentration.

sampling and methods : data related to treatment with hypotonic and isotonic intravenous solutions ( volume , type and duration) were collected for 150 patients in 3 Syrian hospitals , in addition to observation of complications which appear on them, and monitoring their laboratory analysis about serum concentration of sodium, potassium and blood ph .errors were detected by a private protocol designed for this study.

results : errors during treatment with hypotonic and isotonic intravenous solutions were made with 70.7% of patients .the number of patients who had sodium serum concentration higher than normal after therapy, also the number of patients who had potassium serum concentration lower than normal, both had a statically significant increase.

discussion and conclusions : most patients had errors and complications of intravenous therapy, with a lack in controlling laboratory analysis correspondent with the intravenous therapy, so it is better to set protocols that ease the medical team job.
