Osteoporosis is a widespread metabolic bone disease, characterized by reduced bone mineral density.

osteoporosis is expanded in women after menopause.

because of the high incidence of complications and the associated financial burden for the health system, new parameters for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes are urgently needed.

in this regard, research focused on vitamin k, as a biochemical bone marker has provided promising results.

vitamin k is known to influence bone metabolism by several mechanism.

in this study, we measured serum levels of vitamin k1 in 38 subjects, divided into two group 1 had 23 postmenopausal osteoporotic women, group 2 had 15 healthy control postmenopausal women (with normal BMD), using a standardized enzyme-linked immune sorbent assay (ELISA) kit.

the mean serum vitamin K1 level was significantly lower in the postmenopausal osteoporotic women group, than in the normal control group (P< 0.0001).

our study suggests that vitamin K1 may have a complementary role in diagnosing post-menopausal osteoporosis.
