Osteoporosis is a silent disease without any evidence of disease until a fracture occurs.

its prevalence increases steadily in parallel with the increase of life, especially in postmenopausal women, where bone loss accelerates in the next decade of menopause and later continues with age.

several studies have shown that elevated iron levels represented by elevated serum ferritin levels may play an important role in human bone metabolism.

there is no study in Syria associate between osteoporosis and serum ferritin levels in Syrian women, so the aim of this study is to investigate association between serum ferritin level and bone mineral density in Syrian osteoporosis postmenopausal women.

the study included 80 women after menopause, 62 of them suffer from osteoporosis, while of 18 them were with normal t-score value.

the ferritin assay was performed for all women by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay ELISA.

in addition, the serum iron and total iron binding capacity were measured for women by hitachi 912.

the mean serum ferritin level was higher in the postmenopausal women with low BMD group than in normal control group (262.6±96.5 ng/ml and 181.6±71.4 ng/ml, respectively).

there was a significant statistical difference between the two studied groups (P <0.001).

Elevated serum ferritin level was correlated with osteoporosis women in menopause group between 11-20 years.
