Abstract EN

Hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumonia ftrains are some of the moft dangerous bacteria causing Nosocomial infections, especially surgical site infections SSIs.

They are responsible for increasing morbidity, treatment coft and mortality.

Therefore, this ftudy aimed to isolate Klebsiella pneumonia from patients of surgical sections and invefti-gate the pathogenicity indicators of its ftrains.

A total of 164 swab samples from SSIs were included in this ftudy.

Bacteria were isolated using EMB medium and identified by biochemical tefts.

As a result, 60 ftrains were isolated (36.6%).

These isolates were screened for 5 virulence factors: Adherence capacity, mannose resiftant haemagglutina-tion (MRHA), mannose sensitive haemagglutination (MSHA), capsule CPS, hypermu-coviscocity (HMV).

Out of 60 isolates, 56 had CPS, 50 produced MSHA, 45 produced MRHA, 30 had high adherence, 15 had HMV.

In conclusion, virulence factors ftudy showed 30 (50%) high virulence ftrains (had 4 or 5 factors) compared to 22 (36.7%) in the moderate (3 or 2 factors) and 8 (13.3%) ones’ low (1 factor) group, respectively.

Moft of high virulence ftrains were isolated from plaftic surgery (11), orthopedic surgery (6) and heart surgery (3).

These outcomes are important in hospitals for implementing effective procedures to control the high pathogenicity of these ftrains and prevent the spread to other sections.
