Abstract EN

The research aims to determine the chemical composition of essential oil of phlomis viscosa spread in Syria and evaluate plant’s antioxidant activity.

The essential oil was extracted from the aerial parts of plant, the yield was determined, and the essential oil sample was analyzed using GC-MS technique.

The extracts of the plant were prepared by maceration, using three different polar solutions (methanol-chloroform-water).

The antioxidant activity of plant extracts and essential oil was evaluated by determining their total phenolic content and their scavenging capacity for 2,2-diphenyl-1- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH).

The results of the GC-MS analysis showed presence of 54 compounds in oil extracted from plant’s aerial parts, the largeft percentage of two main compounds Germacrene-D (24.68%) and Be-ta-Farnesene (9.27%).

The results also showed that the methanolic extract contained the higheft percentage of phenols (185.8 ± 0.798 mg / g), while the scavenging effect of the DPPH radical was in aqueous extract (IC50 = 65.308±1.175 μg/ml).
