Abstract EN

Damascus city is rich of many medicinal plants that enriched traditional medicine with a wide range of herbal treatments, which relied on the community to treat many diseases.

The aim of this research is study the chemical composition and anti-bacterial effect of the volatile oil extracted from the aerobic parts of the Geranium, commonly used as a preservative and Flavored of food.

The plant samples of Pelargonium graveolens L collected from different places in Damascus.

The extraction of the volatile oil of Pelargonium graveolens achieved using steam distillation method, by Clevenger apparatus, the percentage of the extracted volatile oil was 0.5%.

The chemical composition of the volatile oil was studied using two methods: The chemical components of the volatile oil were first identified by two-dimensional gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of Pelargonium graveolens volatile oil, using rapid scanning quadrupole mass spectrometry; then the percentages of the volatile oil components were determined using a gas chromatography device bound to FID.

65 chemical compounds have been identified in the volatile oil sample extracted from the aerial parts of the Pelargonium graveolens.

The main components of volatile oil are Citronellol (31.4%), Geraniol (17.3%), and Linalool (6.2%).

Antibacterial activity of volatile oil was studied on three types of bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli using the diffusion method of the disc.

The results showed that the most sensitive bacteria for volatile oil were Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
