Abstract EN

Harmal or Syrian rue is a perennial herbaceous plant, belongs to the Nitrariaceae family.

It was widely used in folk medicine for the treatment of many diseases.

So, it is an inspiring source for developing many effective treatments.

This study aims to determine the chemical constituents of different parts of Peganum harmala and determine the total alkaloids content, using a simple spectrophotometric method based on the reaction with Bromocresol green.

Phytochemical screening of P.

harmala seeds showed presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, anthraquinone glycosides, indole ring and absence of cardiac glycosides, tannins and saponins.

While, Phytochemical screening of the roots, showed the presence of saponins, alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, indole ring, steroids, and triterpenes, with absence of both anthraquinones and cardiac glycosides.

Total alkaloids content in 100g seeds was 6.5% and the roots was 1.68%.
