Abstract EN

The interest in using medicinal preparations is increasing, as it is included in many therapeutic regimes worldwide.

In order to provide a proper usage according to safety criteria we quantified the concentrations of two important toxic metals: Lead and Cadmium in 55 samples of medicinal herbal preparations designed to be used as infusion or capsule, and are available in Syrian market either in pharmacies or in herbalist shops.

Acid digestion was adopted according to the (3050b) protocol and the measurement was performed by Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer.

The results indicated that 70.9% of the herbal mixtures were above the permissible World Health Organization limits WHO (2007) for Cadmium and 3.9% for lead.

This study concludes that it is important to investigate the presence of heavy metals in herbal mixtures before introducing them to market and to apply a sort of control in order to make these preparations safe for human consumption.
