Abstract EN

Schinus molle L.

(Anacardiaceae) is a tree originated from South America but has since been introduced to the Mediterranean area.

The plant exerts several biological effects.

However, no information is available regarding its tyrosinase inhibitory activity.

Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the tyrosinase inhibition potential of the leaves using dopachrome method.

Different concentrations of the ethanolic extract and essential oil were examined against L-Dopa oxidation in comparison to HQ and Benzoic acid and the IC 50 was calculated.

The result of the present study showed that the essential oil did not show any anti- tyrosinase activity.

However, the hydroethanolic leaves extract exhibited inhibition activity towards the action of tyrosinase on L-Dopa in a dose dependant manner with IC50 value of 298g/ml.The inhibition kinetic of this extract was further analyzed by Lineweaver-Burk plot and the result revealed that the extract was a mixed-type inhibitor.

These findings revealed that leaves extract of Schinus molle exerted a moderate anti- tyrosinase activities and may be further developed as a natural source of tyrosinase inhibitors which may be used in cosmetic as skin lightening agent or in pharmaceutical applications to treat hyperpigmentation disorders.
