Abstract EN

Indeed, 'ilm al-waqf wa al-ibtida (the science of stopping and beginning) in Quranic verses is a very honourable science.

Its knowledge is grounded upon numerous sciences that lead a person to fully perceive its fundamental principles.

Ibn Mujahid states, “No one can fully perceive and apply it (this science) except who is competent in Arabic grammar, modes of Quranic recitation, Quranic exegesis, Quranic stories and their respective summaries, and the language of the Quran.” Whoever carefully examines this statement realizes that Ibn Mujahid gave precedence to Arabic grammar and Quranic exegesis because they are the bases from which to fully comprehend and apply this science.

Whoever has read the book al-Muktafa, by al-Dani, will find the impact of these two, Arabic grammar and Quranic exegesis, in hundreds of issues related to stopping in Quran and Quranic meanings, as well as their employment in differentiating the types of stopping points.

For this reason, this research aims to deeply explore these two aspects to perceive the extent of their impact in judging between a al-waqf al-tamm (complete stop) and al-waqf al-kafi (sufficient stop), so that the judgement is based off the 'Irab (syntax) and meaning of the word stopped on.

Additionally, to confirm that the differences in this science are directly affected by the differences between the scholars of Quranic exegesis and scholars of 'Irab, as is the case with the sample of this research, which is clearly seen in the books of Arabic language, modes of recitation, and Quranic exegesis.
