Assessing personality traits of Saudi soccer referees and matches management relationship

Abstract EN

The research assessed the relationship between personality traits and matches management of soccer referees in Saudi Arabia.

To achieve this objective, the researcher has constructed a scale named ‘The Soccer Referee Personality Traits Scale (PRPTS)’.

The scale contained six dimensions, including 80 items.

PRPTS was used to measure soccer referees’ personality traits and match management in Saudi Arabia.

The researcher also applied the Referee Evaluation Assessment form (REA-SA) provided by the Saudi Soccer Federation.

The researcher used both descriptive approaches and causation comparison to collect data for the PRPTS scale.

A sample of 100 referees was randomly selected among soccer referees registered at all levels of the Saudi Soccer Federation.

Results showed that personality traits of soccer referees were ranked as follows: self-confidence trait was reported as the highest value (M = 76%), followed by the focus-attention trait, sociability trait, controllability trait, responsibility trait, and finally, the decision-making trait was the lowest value (M = 70%) reported among Saudi soccer referees respectively.

All these traits were highly statically significant concerning the matches management.

There were also statistically significant differences in all scale dimensions between upper-level soccer referees and lower-level soccer referees in favour of upper-level football.
