Abstract EN

During the nineteenth century, life in the United States was largely dominated by the conflict between the North and the South as a result of the issue of slavery.

The North attacked captivity, but the South defended it.

Such conflict, however, eventually led to the American Civil War (1861-1865).

Consequently, American literature of that century largely deals with such dominating atmosphere.

The most important literary piece of work that defends the Northern point of view is unquestionably the novel Uncle Tom‖s Cabin; or, Life among the Lowly (1852
